The Importance Of The Scriptures (Part 3)

So what makes the scriptures so important? We saw firstly in our last post that they are inspired by the Spirit of God. Secondly Paul points out that the scriptures are profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and also to instruct us how to do what’s right. That is not all. Paul still has a little more to tell us why the scriptures are so vital to us. Lets look at our passage again.

2 Timothy 3:16-17All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Instruction in Righteousness: Gods word tells us how to live rightly before God and men. This speaks of early childhood instruction as a father gently teaches his child about the world or how to have manners. It’s instructing you on the right kind of life. It’s instructing us in righteousness. God’s word teaches us how to walk with others and God in the proper way.
Maybe you have questions in your life about situations? Perhaps you don’t know what to do when this or that happens.  For example

Stealing: In the world when you wanted something you stole it. You have known that your whole life. Now that your a christian what are you to do? God tells us in His word. Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

Cussing: In the world you would cuss when people got you mad or cut you off. Now that your a christian what do you do? Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Gossiping, anger, and bitterness: In the world you were bitter, angry, and talked bad about others. Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

God wants to help us in the right way to live. Not what we think is right but what is right before God. But like every infomercial wait there’s more! Lets read our passage again.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Word of God fully equips: The word of God supplies us with the necessary items for a particular purpose. The Word prepares (someone) mentally for a particular situation or task.
Complete(Mature): Paul says the Word of God makes us complete. God wants you to be complete. The Greek word literally is fully matured or of full age, fully matured. Gods Word makes us fully matured. It also equips us.
Equipped: perfectly prepared. In other words, the word of God is that which thoroughly prepares me for any work that God might have for you and I to do. Now many people have a legitimate and proper desire to be used of God. “Oh God, I want you to use my life” good. That’s proper and you should have that desire. But God prepares the instruments through which He works and the most important preparation is through the Word of God. That is where you become thoroughly equipped to do the work that God has designed and ordained for you. So if you want God to use your life, then thoroughly equip yourself in the Word of God, the study, the understanding.
That’s probably why your reading this today. Are you prepared leader? Have you been in the word? Jesus was prepared by this word. As a matter of fact Jesus was so into the word His parents had to literally pull Him out of church. He used the word. He memorized the word. He realized the importance of the word.

Jesus when tempted: by Satan said, “It is written!” Not just quoted it. He followed it. That is how he overcame sin.
Jesus when tested: by the Pharisees said, “Jesus said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?” He rebuked them for not knowing the scriptures as Spiritual guides.
Jesus when questioned truthfully by a ruler: “You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.” Jesus pointed out truth by the scriptures.
Jesus when sharing with his disciples: said, “And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”

The scriptures are vital for our every day lives and especially for the ministry. Lets review one more time and see why the scriptures are so important.

Word of God is inspired: Just like God used the disciples to write the word moving them by the Spirit. Ordinary men. God also desires to use you. Are you prepared for every good work?
Word of God is profitable: God’s word is not just there for fun but it is profitable for you and your family. To guide them in truth, to correct, to instruct to get you ready for what God wants to use you for. It is profitable for doctrine, reproof/correction, and instruction in righteousness.
Word of God fully equips: Oh how God wants to use you! You want to be used of God! You may feel called to ministry but are you willing to take the time to be prepared. If the word is your life you will be fully equipped. Do you know your doctrine? Are you being corrected? Are you learning how to walk. Or are you unprepared? The scriptures are vital for our lives. I pray that you and I see the importance of the scriptures in our lives. I know there are so many other reasons the scriptures are important.
