Paul, Peter, Daniel, John, David and Moses are just a few of the names that no doubt every Christian is familiar with. In fact I am sure if one said they did not know these names all heads would turn and look at them thinking that person is either a new Christian or not saved. Well what about the names Shiphrah and Puah? No. They are in Scripture and they are found in Exodus chapter one. No, they did not slay a giant like David. I will agree that they did not call down fire from heaven like Elijah. Agreed, like Paul they did not write extensive pieces of Scripture. So what did they do? They were midwives. This is equivalent to the nurse that you find in any normal hospital. The type that comes to work each day, works long hours by patiently and willingly caring for the mothers to be and at the end of their grueling 12 hour shift they find they are told to stay longer. But still, what made them different from all the others midwives like them in all Egypt that allowed them the honor of having their names written down and forever engraved in the Word of God? What an honor! The story tells us the answer. The reason very simply was they feared God. Yes they lied (that’s another discussion). Yes they deceived the king but above all that what stands out about them is they feared God. AND GOD NOTICED.
Christian, you may not be a scholar, you may not be a mighty warrior, and you may not be a “who’s who” in present church history or even at your present church. You may just be that one who goes to church faithfully, but isn’t able to get involved. You try to pay your bills on time, you love your family and you work hard to care for them. Because of the business of life, both at home and work you aren’t able to dive deep into the pages of Scripture with extensive Bible study but you do faithfully read when you can and pray often. However, most of all, the deep seated drive of your life is…you love God. This passage is trying to show us that God takes note of the seemingly insignificant that are doing His work. Maybe not by preaching a Bible study or “serving” 20 – 40 hours a week at the building called “the church” but they are serving Him by making Him known in the places He is not known. They display His worth and value by their way of living in the eyes of those that don’t know God. So when they say “I will not murder and I don’t care if this is a command from the most powerful man in the land.” When asked why, the answer is because God is the one who is God and not a man and they love Him and fear Him. Him who is not seen but who He is and what He is like is seen in the lives of His people. God sees that individual and is glorified extensively by their delight in Him and reverence of Him in everyday living in the sight of those that are blind to Him. I can’t help but wonder…just how many Shiphrah’s and Puah’s are out there? Thank God for them!

Good reminder Andre. I think we are all going to be surprised when we get to heaven and we see that the great people will be those we never noticed in Church but who served God faithfully in their own little spheres of influence.

You hit it on the nail. IF—more “christians” feared God this nation would not be where it is today. However those “few” who trully fear God await our ultimate call– which is heaven.
